The price of greeting cards has gotten out of hand. It’s not difficult to spend $5.99 for a card. I don’t mean a fancy “talking” card. I mean a simple greeting card. I think this is a waste of money. Think about it: you can buy a paperback novel – with hundreds of pages, instead of 2 – for almost the same price!
I’m a lucky man. I married a woman who is just as frugal as I am in this regard. In fact, My wife and I both hate paying such ridiculous prices for a greeting card so much, we scold each other if we spend over $2.99 for a card!
Besides, most of the greeting card industry is built around guilt anyway. We all know it. Do you really buy your mom a mother’s day card because it’s your way of expressing yourself? No. You buy it because you’d look and feel like a total heel if you didn’t!
I dunno, maybe this is just a guy’s perspective.
So here’s my “secret” to saving up to 70% on the cost of a greeting card – avoid the occasion-specific cards! Go generic. I mean emotionally generic, not brand-name generic. I buy my wife Intuitions cards that are labeled “romantic” or “love” or even “friend” (because she is my best friend, and I think that’s important in a marriage), instead of the cards under the “Anniversary – wife” label. You may have a different selection in your section, but the cards are really quite nice. The artwork ranges from simple black and white photos to hand drawn art.
I can get a romantic and beautiful “love”-based card for about $2.50 that looks better and says more with fewer words than those sappy “Mother’s Day” card category cards that cost $5.99! I personalize it with my own message and I not only save money, but give a more personal gift.
