MSNBC Thinks U.S. Fidelis Auto Warranty is a Scam Too! (Video)

Posted on | April 24, 2009 |

I get A LOT of reader comments on my December post, Is us Fidelis auto warranty a scam?.

When I wrote that post, I was honestly just asking a question about Auto Warranties in general and U. S. Fidelis was my foil since they were on the television literally every time I turned around (they still are!).

Well, it seems many people are convinced that U. S. Fidelis IS a scam, and they’re not alone.

NBC’s The Today Show did a piece on Wednesday highlighting some of the dishonest practices employed by U. S. Fidelis.

Here’s the vid:

MSNBC's Today Investigates piece on U. S. Fidelis.

It’s pretty damning.

You and NBC ought to be ashamed of yor US Fidelis misleading stories. The lady that had a problem in the video had a CHECK ENGINE light on for 3 days before she sought service on her vehicle. Her contract clearly states that she seek resolition immediately, but instead she drove around for 3 days abd by that timeher engine was damaged due to neglect. Funny how the negative is alwaus all you hear. I rec. Thanks from many people who utilize our coverage every daym. This is an incrediably bias story and I am ashamed of you and the Todau show. I will not view The Today Show ever again and I am a long time viewerm

I found the Today Show program on US Fidelis VERY INFORMATIVE. Also all the blogs on ripoffreport.com, complaintsboard.com, iripoff.com, stltoday.com, videos on http://www.ksdk.com, videos on kmov.com, lawsuit information on the the Missouri Attorney general’s website, the Casey and Devoti website who is handling the class action lawsuit, the Missouri Insurance Commisioner information that US Fidelis owners Darain and Cory Atkinson inadvertently missed a court date in Jefferson City (Missouri’s capital)claiming to have confused the date on the subpeona, should I go on?

The US Fidelis is a total scam wen I saw all those reviews and reports on them after I got the coverage wid them I was shocked! I cancelled my policy right away! All that stuff about you not payin upfront and they will handle everything is a total lie! THEY expect YOU to pay for certain bills up front an then take FOREVER to reimburse you! U basically have to call and threatin to report them to get ur money back! An the whole thing about the Founder Corey Atkins not showing up for an nbc show and then on top of that missing a court date? How strange is that? he OBVIOUSLY got something to hide!! Theres something fishy about them an I can smell it! Trust me I did my research!! The best thing to do is to forget about auto warranties and jus suck it up an pay the bills out of pocket cause in the end ur only gettin screwed messing with extended warranties!

Today, June 17, 2009, I called an inquired about this extended warranty and was given a high pressure “what if” scenario, eventually had the price lowered as well as the monthly payments and was informed that if I did not accept this warranty tody, I could not get all the discounts of “special” pricing. Also, after informing them of me just calling to inquire and could not join until Friday, I was informed that he could take my credit card information and “keep the file open” until Friday afternoon when the charge would be proccessed. Dear Daddy; thank you for stressing the fact “if it seems as though it’s too good to be true - it is”. I’ve never heard of someone post dating credit card information. Then I decided to do some investigative work on my own and guess what? I found numerous complaints on this company. Finally I hung up and surprisingly, they called me back immediately on my phone. No pertinent information was given (VIN, address or my correct name). The representative assured me this was a sound investment as well as the company being legitemate and in business for well over 25 years. However, until recently, I have not heard of this company. If Forrest Talley is an employee of this company, his grammar should be indicative of their warranty and the qualtiy of employees they hire to represent the company. Mr. Talley should have taken pride in his message, grammar and spelling instead of trying to discredit one of their consumers. Dear “Worked There”, thank you for being honest. I appreciate you if no one else commend you for your honesty.

ADD ON: The tv ad cleary informs the consumer of not having to pay anything for repairs. However, during the sales spill, for each repair there is a deductible. In other words, various other expenses such as car rentals, towing etc., you pay out-of-pocket or upfront and after submitting the receipt to the company you are supposed to bereimbursed by the company per the extended warranty. This is not beneficial if an unexpected incident occured while out of town or on a trip.

U.S. Fidelis is a total scam. I am writing this on 8/25/2009
I purchased the policy and this is the second time in 2 months they are denying payment. I have a power window motor which failed. It failed supposively due to the fact that the power regular failed. The regular isn’t covered and therefore when a non covered part failes they won’t cover the “covered” part. I asked where in my conttract does it say this. It doesn’t and the customer service person person couldn’t find it either.
I then asked when a piece of dust gets through your carb, and it destroyes your engine since the piece of dust isn’t covered, the enginge wouldn’t be either. The customer service person tried to tell me that could never happen. I continued and said but if it did, the enging repair wouldn’t be covered! It wouldn’t either. I asked if a connecting rod nut got loose and was floating in the oil pan and then somehow got lodged in another part and that blew the engine, the engine wouldn’t be covered because the connecting rod nuts aren’t covered.
To make a long story short, I have cancelled this scam policy and my credit card told me there are other complaints against U.S. Fidelis as well. They are trying to recover all the money I have paid so far.

    U.S. Fidelis you suck!

To all that have been scammed, this seems so far to be of some cauce and effect.

U.S. Fidelis has called me 2 days ago and told me now that I would get my prorated money back. Here’s what I have done to U.S. Fidelis

1: Called Nascar sponsorship located in NYC and lodged a complaint. I mentioned that nascar needs this like the other major sports need steriods. Nascar’s good name is associated with a multi million dollar scam.

2: I called Rusty Wallace Racing: Here’s there address and phone numer. They said they have a special number at U.S. Fidelis. I refused to take the number and left a pretty harsh message for promotions and Mr. Wallace as the front man for this scam.

3: Go on the Missouri website for sconsumer affairs and file a grievance

4: Call the attroney General of you state.

5: Call the FTC ( Federal Trade comission at 877-382-4357 and register a complaint

Any and which way we can cause a problem for Nascar - ie Rusti Wallace Racing will put pressure on U.S. Fidelis.

Send emails out to all your contacts in regards to U.S. Fidelis

Don’t spent a dime on anything to do with Rusty Wallace Racing untils he apologizes to the public and removes U.S. Fidelis from his webpage
    http://www.rustywallace.com/

The more pressure, politically and monentary we put on all of these institutions then we have a chance to stop the insanity

All reputable dis-reputable mechanical breakdown insurance companies can and will require maintenance receipts. They need you insure that the average Joe did not go 21,000 miles without having changed the oil changed or having the wrong type (not brand) of oil. Yes, it matters.
But from the repair facility standpoint, this is scam. SCAM. I have seen so many unsuspecting customers who have to decide if they are being scammed by the shop or the big money warranty co. The shop will be paid via current retail rates for parts and labor if covered….Which one says NO to repair?
If you keep a vehicle outside basic factory warranty terms, it would behoove one to buy a warranty backed by the dealership and or manufacturer. You can always direct heat on your local dealer or car company as they will have a future stake in your satisfaction. Your average convicted felon currently building a $25,000,000.00 plus mansion in this case, for some strange reason, may not.

First, thanks to all of you who’ve been burned by US Fidelis for posting these warnings online. I just saw one of their ads and it sounded too good to be true. So I Googled “US Fidelis scams” and sure enough, I got this web site and the MSNBC/ Today video. So, no extended warranties for me. (Unless I see an approving writeup in Consumer Reports someday. I won’t hold my breath.)

The astonishing thing is how little our governments, federal and State, do to protect us from fraudsters like US Fidelis and its founder, Darain Atkinson. Why is a convicted felon even allowed to run a financial services corporation?!! I see that the State of Missouri has filed a civil suit against US Fidelis, but where are the prosecutors?

Interesting note: if you Google “Darain Atkinson,” you’ll find a lot of hits praising his church ties and charitable works. They appear to all link back to a site where people can publish their own press releases. Looks like Darain doing a little tweaking on the search engines. But if any reader of this is still gullible enough to think that religious ties and charitable donations demonstrate rehabilitation, remember this: Bernie Madoff was a big donor to charities. It’s a good way for a sociopath to hide his true nature.

    Good luck to you all.

U.S. Fedelis is a scam!!! I have been trying to get my car repaired for 3 weeks now. They have denied my claim after an inspector said there wasn’t any neglect on our part. I received 3 different stories on why the claim was denied. I have receipts showing all of the maintenance we have done since purchasing the car, which prove there was not any neglect on our behalf. We do not live on the busline so we have to walk our 5 year old daughter up to 3 miles to school.(crossing over the freeway) We can no longer afford to take the taxicab, or rent cars. I am a fulltime college student, and have had to miss several days of school because U.S. Fedelis mislead us. We really believed that if something happened with our car, we would be covered. At this present time, I have wrote the company, and I am contacting the Attourney General of Georgia.

I agree. These so called “scam” artist need to be prosecuted. The economy is bad enough without these thiefs trying to take our money and in no way are willing to back up their warranties. I have researched many warranties and I have yet to find one that is completely legitimate.
US Fidelis has to be one of the biggest ones for deceit.
I am appalled at the way these companies work, there are alot of people out there trying to make ends meet and think they are getting a deal with these companies.
If you need a warranty always do your research first, it pays not to get scammed and treated this way. I also think that maybe a savings account would be better, at least I would be earning money at the same time in interest, although not much but its better than nothing. Who knows you may never need to use that warranty that you just obligated yourself to for 2 to 3k. Think about what you do before you jump into anything.
A message for Scammed, also contact The Better Business Bureau of GA. They may also be able to help you file.

I saw the add on TV today and thought it would be a good idea but i did not get the number. So I googled US Fedelis and the google drop down added scam to what i typed in. I thought that should be something to look into and i found this website along with many others. Just for the heck of it i called and it was a high pressured call and what if senarios were added. The guy kept me on the phone for over 45 minutes. The price kept droping and he then asked for my credit card number so they could take the money out at a later date and i found that to be fishy. Im glad i saw these eye opening websites before i committed.

    After market warranties.

To Mike and / or anyone else.
After the fiesco with U.S. Scamdellis oops sorry U.S. Fidelis, I looked into quite a few after market warranties. I didn’t find one that did what they claim. Please read all the infomation very carefully, the FINE PRINT and you’ll see why. They is another company that didn’t warranty a engine that blew because the person didn’t keep the oil physically that had been changed. There are outs. Also the best way to find out is a call to your local dealer and speak to the service manager. If they recomend a warranty then buy all means go with it.
I have always purchased extended warranties when I purchased my new car. They were are purchased through the dealer and since I am mostly a GM guy, never had a problem. U.S. Fidelis is the largest of the scams, but certainly not the only one. Good luck

WOW - I am not alone. I have a GMC Denali that had the factory extended warranty up to 75,000 miles on it. I purchased the second warranty from US Fidelis with 75,158 miles on it. I could have lied when they asked but this was the actual miles when I called them. US Fidelis made me sit a 1,000 mile grace period and said my warranty would go into effect at 76,158 miles. I thought this was more than fair so they could protect themselves that I did not already have damage to the vehicle.

Well, I took my family on a road trip to Mexico for five days and my 9 year old son noticed a leak under the vehicle. As soon as we returned, I took it into the same dealership that has always serviced the vehicle since day one. They found several issues with the vehicle and called US Fidelis. They said DON’T FIX it until “our” inspector could come out 2 days later. After the inspector came out, they told me I was “DENIED” on all claims becuase they were “pre-existing” conditions. What a load of crap. Why would I have “pre-existing” conditions when I had a warranty up to the point the I bought the US Fidelis? What was the purpose of me having to dirve 1,000 miles to “prove to US Fidelis” that the car did NOT have any “pre-existing” conditions?

Bottom line is they want our money but won’t let go of thiers. They need it all to build the CEO’s 17 Million mansion and to pay for the Rusty Wallace Nascar sponsorship that sucked me in to begin with.

If you are reading this and considering a warranty from US Fidelis, DON’T DO IT!!!!

I have written Rusty Wallace Inc and complained but I am sure they could care less. I have joined the class action lawsuit out of Missouri and will wait to see what happens.

I have always considered myself fairly smart when it comes to rip-off prevention but I guess I screwed up here. I bought a policy from fidelis back in the beginning of summer. In Response to the April 29th comment from Forrest Talley, I recently called US Fidelis to explore getting their plan. The first thing I got was an old style pressure sales technique of “let me check with my manager to see if I can give you the ’special deal’ today”.

I was then told that I could only get the “deal” if I gave a down payment and signed up for the program by the end of the call. I said to them that I would need to see the contract before I could agree to anything. The person on the phone said that he could not give me a contract until I signed up. This is exactly opposite of the way contract law works.

The agent only said I could look at a sample contract on line which was, as best, general. However, even the sample contract indicated that it did not pay for things like head gaskets and related damages, which is one of the most common engine related failures. They would not offer a copy of the contract before my signing up, and assumed that I would take the contract anyway, which I would not.

I have since then done some tracking of the phone numbers advertised, and noticed at least 3 other companies that advertise on TV are linked together.

While there seems to be some logic to getting a service contract, this lack of integrity in standard business practices taints the entire industry.

  34. C Williams

I wish I would have researched U S Fidelis further before I signed the contract with them and gave them any money. I really do pray all is well on my end and car gets the proper service it needs and U S Fidelis pays for it. I will pray on it and the right thing will happen!!!

  37. Edward R
    November 19th, 2009 @ 6:28 pm

Buyer beware…. Buying a service contract from a company from a different state than you live is dangerous.. Make sure to find out if they are in the state insurance pool of your state.. Better if they were actually licensed to conduct business in your state… Make sure that they are properly insured, 100 million+, and that the actual administrator of claims is not on foreign soil…. Make sure that if the warranty company is backed by a risk retention group that it’s reserves are at least 100 million+… I’ve seen too many underinsured warranty companies go bankrupt and to buy over the internet or over the phone without knowing 100% who your dealing with is dangerous….

  38. Edward R
    November 19th, 2009 @ 6:37 pm

This comment is to Mike…. What state are you in…? I’m the Manager of a Car Dealership and we sell aftermarket warranty’s… My thought is this, if I wouldn’t buy it myself, why would I sell the product to someone else..? The last thing I want is my customer calling me and complaining that the warranty I sold them didn’t cover anything… Another red flag to consider is warranty companies selling their product without a vehicle inspection first.. If they planned on covering things I’d think that would be an important part of their procedure..

Just another victim of US scamdelis! It has been 4 weeks since fist starting to get my car fixed. The next move is proving without receipts for oil changes since day one of buying the vehicle, when the vehicle is a 2005 and their policy didn’t start until 2008. Keeping our fingers x’d that our OnStar history record of oil changes will be enough for them. I’m sure they will find something new to not honor their fantastic ripoff scheme. The graphs are dated on the bottom and show when the oil was changed & the percentages but they want color copies now. What we are attempting to do instead of providing them every single receipt of oil changes is show them past history through ONSTAR. Hoping this may help someone else in the future and we’ll keep sending postings on the updates of giving them a run for their money! SCAMMERS!

Well after fighting for over a month with the scammers and sending them copies of our oil change history from our OnStar records that date back to 2006 they will not accept the OnStar records stating that we could of reset it and there is no proff that the oil was actually changed. Yeah right! I’m sure we knew back in 2005 that we were going to purchase their warranty in 2008. I can’t believe that this company is still getting away with millions of dollars worth of scamming! Something has to be done soon, but when will they be stopped?

first of all the msnbc report was so slanted and classic tabloid format I lost a lot of respect for them. The thing I want to know and NOBODY seems to know is who is this CEO Chris Reilly? I cant find any info on him anywhere.
All these warranty companies are the same. They are all greedy and the warranties are hard to get claims paid and the power train plans are pretty much worthless. Rusty Wallace I am sure will find a way to salvage his good name and get away from this lemon. As far as there church activies and charitable programs remember most companies do it to look respectable, even the mafia was known for charity. I could go on and on about this company and deceptive greedy practices but I hope someone else will read this and not waste their hard earned money and time

[...] NBC had a story on U. S. Fidelis earlier this week. I’ve posted a link to it at the post: MSNBC Thinks U.S. Fidelis Auto Warranty is a Scam Too! (Video). [...]

I purchased US Fidelis 3 years ago and now in need of using them for my truck repair. I live in Pennsylvania and am now in Florida for 4 months. I did not bring the info with me. Does anyone have the number I can call for FILING A CLAIM? With all of the info regarding scamming, I am probably going to be in the middle of a mess like you all were. I will keep you posted. thanx alot
