A Simple Approach to Getting Out of Debt & Into Wealth

My Credit Card Company is Going Green!

Posted on | July 24, 2008 |

My Credit Card Company Wants me to Think They’re Green.

Well, not really, but they’d like me to think they are.

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting sick of all this “green marketing.” Every time I turn around, I see some company brochure telling me how green they are.

It seems that green is the new black, as they say.

I went to the bank today and I literally could not turn in any direction without seeing a marketing pamphlet telling me that the bank was “going green!”

  • Online checking!
  • Online Bill-pay!
  • Online statements!
  • Online loan applications!

- All FREE!

Whoopdy-doo.

I already have all that. It’s nothing new, but they think I’m such a slave to the green movement I’ll sign up for an extra few accounts just to be even more green.

The worst I’ve seen so far is my credit card statement.

Every month I get a paper statement and pay the balance in full online, electronically. But every month they cram the statement mailer full of advertising for crap (watches, coffee cups, luggage, etc..) and now they’re even putting in green marketing.

They proudly state that they are a “green company” and “care deeply about the environment.” To show me how much they care, they offer statements free online.

Yes, they care SO MUCH about the environment that they send me half a pound of junk mail with every statement and try to get me to sign up for automatic online statements.

If they really cared, they stop sending me so much marketing crap with every statement.

As an aside, I don’t sign up for online statements because I don’t want to miss a payment. I work in the computer field and sometimes I get so burnt out that I don’t check my email for weeks at a time. I’m afraid that I’d miss a credit card statement doing this and then I’d be financial toast with jacked up interest and late fees. So I keep the paper statement and file it in my bill basket every month to be paid on pay day.

How about you? Have you seen any companies who are dishonestly taking advantage of green marketing hype?
